Eye Exam and Consultation

During an eye exam, our team will ask you questions about any symptoms or issues you are experiencing, medications you are currently taking, any blurry vision, your work environment, and your overall health. Family history and previous eye or vision conditions will also be discussed during this part of the examination. We will consider this information when determining any treatments or recommendations.

Vision Testing During Your Eye Exam

Regular vision testing and evaluations ensure that you always have the clearest vision possible. Our Gardendale optometrist provides routine visual acuity tests as part of a comprehensive eye exam. During the exam, each eye is measured for how well it sees using both a wall chart and a reading chart. The results are recorded as a fraction, with 20/20 representing standard visual acuity for distance and reading. Based on the results, the optometrist may recommend corrective glasses, contact lenses, or eye exercises.

Eye Function Testing

In addition to vision testing, a comprehensive eye exam at our Gardendale office includes assessments of eye function. The optometrist conducts several tests to evaluate depth perception, color vision, eye muscle strength, peripheral vision, and responsiveness to light. Additional simple tests help determine how well the eyes are focusing, moving, and working together. The results help identify any underlying issues that may be affecting the eyes’ ability to function properly.

Your Eye Exam & Eye Health

As part of the full exam, our Gardendale optometrist also assesses the overall health of the eyes. This includes a visual inspection using magnification and bright light to examine the eyes and eyelids. To inspect internal structures, the pupils may be dilated. Eye pressure is measured using tonometry, as elevated pressure can be a sign of glaucoma.
